Our Regulator

For many years the 100,000+ English Lawyers (Solicitors) were regulated by the Law Society of England and
Wales. They published a Code of Conduct and they enforced both that code and our compliance with the Law and Regulations concerning how solicitors should conduct their practices.
Solicitors Regulation Authority

That role has now been taken over by the independent (SRA). http://www.sra.org.uk

In July 2007 we became subject to a new Code of Conduct

UK Solicitors are required not only to comply with this Code of Conduct but also with a whole range of other legal obligations, including the obligations to have an annual inspection of their financial records and to file a report from independent accountants confirming whether the firm has broken any of the accounting rules.

Apart from this regulatory control, Solicitors are (under the general law) obliged to pay compensation to their clients if they have been negligent in the work that they have done and they are obliged to carry high levels of insurance against this risk.

English Solicitors are much more tightly regulated and subject to much more stringent controls than lawyers in most of the countries with which we deal.

In short, dealing with an English Solicitor is one of the safest and most protected transactions that you will ever undertake.
