A Place In The Sun Magazine - The Cost of Buying Overseas

Question

I have been thinking about buying a property in Spain or France but the total costs of buying seem very high compared to the UK when you take into consideration taxes and legal fees. Are there are any countries which have a total cost which is closer or lower to the UK

Answer

You are right that the total cost of buying abroad is often higher than it is in the UK. In Spain for example you are probably looking at in the region of 10% in addition to the purchase price. France is similar. This often catch people out because they think that the cost will be the same as in the UK.

Personally I don’t think that the cost of buying should affect where you buy – you should actually be thinking about what you are buying for and where the best place for you is. You will be using the property long after you have paid the purchase costs.
