A Place In The Sun - June 2007 - Inheritance Taxes in Italy

Posted on Tuesday, 30 October 2007 03:13PM
Question: I have heard conflicting reports as to whether there is Inheritance Tax in Italy. Can you please clarify the situation.

Answer: Of course we can – although I am not surprised that you are confused by the situation as it has changed several times over the years. Several years ago Inheritance Tax was abolished in Italy. Recently it has been re-introduced. So basically, yes, there is Inheritance Tax in Italy (although it doesn’t work in exactly the same way as it does in the UK.) It is also important to remember that if you are UK domiciled then you will have to declare the inheritance in the UK as well (although you don’t pay tax twice and only pay any difference between the two tax rates).
