A Place In The Sun - Dec 2004 - Permission to Buy in Turkey

Posted on Monday, 29 October 2007 04:19PM
Question - "I have heard that you need permission to buy a property in Turkey. Is this correct and who do I obtain this from?"

Answer - "This is, indeed, correct.

Under the current law, foreigners cannot purchase property without clearance from the government. It is the military authorities who administer the applications and grant of  permission.

The checks they carry out are twofold:-

Firstly they are checking whether the property is in a Militarily Sensitive Area (next to airbase etc. or your next door neighbours are going to be army generals); secondly, they reserve the right (but rarely pursue it) to check with the UK authorities that the purchaser is of "good character" , i.e. no criminal record.  This requirement for government permission may be abolished within the next year but nobody seems to have given a clear indication of when - watch this space!"
