A Place In The Sun - Aug 2007 - Buying in France - Bank Accounts

Posted on Tuesday, 30 October 2007 03:34PM
Question: I am buying a property in France. Do I need a bank account after I have bought.

Answer: In most countries you technically don’t need a bank account but you will struggle without one. First of all you are likely to want to transfer money to that country to pay for the property. Having your own bank account will make that easier. Then after you have bought the property you will have to pay for the utilities (water, electricity etc) and these often have to be paid by direct debit from a local bank account. If you have a local mortgage the bank is likely to insist that you have a local bank account. Lastly you are likely to want some money when you go on holiday there – which is easier if you have a bank account.
