A Place In The Sun - Apr 2005 - Inheritance in France

Posted on Monday, 29 October 2007 04:43PM
Question: I am buying a property in France and have been told that I have to leave my property to my children. Is this correct? I don’t necessarily wish to leave my property to my children.

Answer: The French law states that even as a foreigner you have to follow French inheritance rules – which means that you cannot cut out your children. If this is going to cause you a problem then this should not put you off buying – there are ways around this. For example, you could own the property in the name of a company (although this has other consequences).

Take advice on this before you commit to buy the property in order to avoid any future problems.”
